if I started collecting space marines, how much mocking should I expect from the rest of the 40k community?

Depends what chapter. Ultramarines then yes. But somethin' badass like Blood Angels, Black Templars or Salamanders then no. Templars are my favourite.

chaos marines means no mockings from me or will, or most others on the forum and a specialised force of chaos marines, (say, a death guard legion) just makes you badass

Go for the Templar ones, the ones with the robes. They're the only ones I would consider buying. In fact, anyone want to swap a load of normal marines for a load of templars? Favourable ratio, 2 of mine for 1 templar. Or something like that.
